When you have to guess

Average ring size for women and men

Jewelers' size guides commonly put most women at about US 5 to 7 (US 6 is the size most often named) and most men at about US 8 to 12. The shaded rows below are the women's range.

Under 30 counts as a diameter, 30 and over as a circumference.

Why the average is a risky guess

The common women's range spans four half sizes: US 5 is 15.7 mm across, US 7 is 17.3 mm. A ring a full size too small will not go over the knuckle, and one a full size too large spins and can slip off. An average is a place to start, not an answer.

If you must guess, choose the larger size and ask the jeweler about resizing before you buy. Better, get the real number: measure a ring they wear, try the quiet ways to find a ring size, or ask a friend to help.

The shaded rows show the women's range. Men's sizes, US 7 and up, are on the men's ring size chart.

Questions

What is the most common ring size for women?

US 6 is the size jewelers' guides most often name for women, with most women between US 5 and 7.

What is the average ring size for men?

Jewelers' guides commonly put most men between US 8 and 12, with 9 to 10 named most often.

Should I guess a ring size for a proposal?

Only as a last resort. If you do, choose the larger size and confirm the ring can be resized; a ring that is too big can be worn until it is fixed, one that is too small cannot.

Does ring size go with height or hand size?

Loosely at best. Knuckles, finger shape and the hand the ring goes on matter more, so measure rather than estimate.
