They wear no rings

How to find a ring size secretly

Six quiet ways, from most to least reliable. Open one to see how.

  1. Ask a friend or family member Most reliable

A sibling, a parent or a close friend may know the size, or can find out by trying on rings together. Send them the helper page: it walks them through it.

  2. Borrow any ring they own

Even one in a drawer helps, if it fits the ring finger. Size it in a minute on the on-screen ring sizer, or trace its inside edge on paper and measure the line across.

  3. Press a ring into soap or clay

No time to measure? Press the ring into a bar of soap or a lump of clay to keep its inside edge, put the ring back, and measure the print across later.

  4. Try one of their rings on your own finger

Slide it on one of your fingers and mark where it stops with a pen. Measure that spot later with a strip of paper and the size converter.

  5. Bring it up in passing

Jewelry ads, a friend's engagement or a ring at a store are natural openings. Some people know their size and will say it.

  6. If you must guess

Choose a ring that can be resized, and ask the jeweler about resizing before you buy. Some propose with a placeholder ring and choose the real one together.

Screens and paper can be off by a little. Before you order, tell the jeweler how you measured and ask about resizing.

Jewelers' own sizing help

Most jewelers publish a size guide, and many will size a ring after you buy. For example, the Tiffany size guide. Ask the jeweler you are buying from what they offer.
