After the surprise

Resize a ring: how many sizes it needs

Pick the ring's current size and the size it should be. Each full US size is 2.55 mm around the band, so going from US 6 to 7 adds about 2.6 mm of metal.

ChangeUp 1 size

How far a ring can be resized depends on its metal and setting. Ask the jeweler before you order.

What resizing changes

To size a ring up, a jeweler usually stretches the band slightly or adds a small piece of metal; to size it down, they remove a piece and join the band again. A US 6 band is 51.9 mm around the inside and a US 7 is 54.4 mm, so one size is a change of about 2.6 mm.

Some rings are hard to resize: bands set with stones all the way around, tension settings, and rings made of tungsten, titanium or ceramic. If you are buying for a surprise, ask about these before you buy.

Questions

How many sizes can a ring be resized?

It depends on the ring. Many plain metal bands can move a size or two; stones set around the band, tension settings and hard metals limit it. Ask the jeweler.

Can every ring be resized?

No. Tungsten, titanium and ceramic rings usually cannot be, and full eternity bands can barely change. Check before buying a ring as a surprise.

How long does resizing take?

It varies by jeweler and ring; ask when you buy, especially before a date like a proposal.

How much bigger is one ring size?

0.81 mm across the inside and about 2.55 mm around.
